5 Things You Must Know About Mumps Even If You Got the Vaccine

You may have heard the news that Harvard University is struggling to contain an outbreak of mumps. The school first confirmed two cases back in February, when director of health services Paul Barreira sent a letter to the community stressing the importance of good hygiene to prevent the illness from spreading. But now there are 40 cases on the Cambridge, Massachusetts, campus, with 11 students currently recovering in isolation, and Barreira is increasingly concerned: "I’m desperate, I’m desperate to get students to take seriously that they shouldn’t be infecting one another," he told student newspaper The Harvard Crimson. "Students are not acting in a responsible way, knowingly exposing other students to the virus."

The classic signs of mumps are puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw, symptoms triggered by tender salivary glands. In children, the illness is generally mild—but in adults, it can lead to severe complications. And while many people are vaccinated against mumps (including all incoming freshmen at Harvard), they can still get sick. Here, five things you should know about the disease.

RELATED: How to Fight 14 Kinds of Classroom Germs

The vaccine doesn"t work for everyone

In the U.S., most patients who get the MMRV vaccine (against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella) are innoculated with the Jeryl Lynn strain of the mumps virus, says Aileen Marty, MD, a professor of infectious diseases at Florida International University. (It"s named after Jeryl Hilleman, the daughter of the doctor who developed the mumps vaccine.) Studies show that this strain offers protection for 95% of people at best, leaving about 5% of people vulnerable. "That"s why we give two doses," she says. "The first dose at 12 to 15 months, and again at 4 to 6 years of age." But even with the standard two doses, some patients "may not produce the quality or quantity of antibodies needed for life-long protection," she explains.

You may not know you have mumps

People typically experience non-specific symptoms at first, like muscle pain, headache, and a low-grade fever, says Dr. Marty. "Then, in about a day or two, they"ll start to notice the swelling of the parotid glands—glands in the cheek," she says. "Usually both [cheeks] are affected, although one side usually swells up bigger than the other." Patients may also experience pain, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, and a general sense of being unwell.

But about 30% of patients don"t develop any symptoms at all, which is part of the reason the virus can spread so quickly, as those people unwittingly infect others. "Think of them as "Typhoid Mary" for the mumps virus," says Dr. Marty.

It"s highly contagious

Another reason mumps is tough to avoid: "Infected people shed the virus long before they start to have symptoms," says Dr. Marty. In other words, if your BFF contracts mumps, she may not realize she"s ill until two days after she became contagious. "So you don"t really know who to protect yourself from." The virus is spread through saliva, so you could contract it from a cough, sneeze, or just talking to an infected person. To protect yourself, it"s best to avoid sharing items such as cups or utensils, and to wash your hands frequently (and for a full 20 seconds).

Mumps can become quite serious

While most people recover from mumps within a few weeks, it"s possible for the disease to worsen. Complications can include hearing loss, testicular inflammation (orchitis), inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis)—even inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. "This virus loves brain tissue," says Dr. Marty. "As many as 50% to 60% of infected people experience a high rise in white blood cells in their cerebrospinal fluid, which can sometimes lead to someone manifesting symptoms of meningitis." In rare cases, patients could also suffer seizures or paralysis.

RELATEDAdult Vaccines: What You Need and When

If you think you have it, see your doc immediately

While there"s no treatment for the disease itself, your primary care physician can treat your symptoms and monitor you for complications. For example, Dr. Marty explains that your doctor may prescribe acetaminophen a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to reduce fever or pain caused by swollen salivary glands. Warm or cold packs can also help relieve discomfort, she adds. "And if the patient develops meningitis or has persistent vomiting, we may provide IV fluids."

How to Cope When You're Mad as Hell at Work

Kelly Ripa fans (including us) were eagerly awaiting her return to Live! With Kelly and Michael this week, to hear what she would say. Ripa was returning from a short hiatus following Michael Strahan’s announcement last week that he was leaving the show to become a co-anchor on Good Morning America. (Ripa was reportedly blindsided when she learned about his departure minutes before the announcement on April 19.)

“I needed a couple of days to gather my thoughts,” Ripa told the Live! audience on Tuesday. “After 26 years with this company I earned the right … I always speak from the heart so I didn’t want to come out here and say something I regret.”

We were impressed to say the least. Ripa handled the drama like a pro, and also noted that the events at ABC started a conversation “about communication, consideration, and most importantly, respect in the workplace”—which may be why her experience is resonating with so many people.

Who can’t relate to feeling hot under the collar at work? “Colleagues don’t always act the way you want them to act, and situations don’t roll out the way you want them to,” says Alexandra Levit, a workplace consultant and co-chair of DeVry University’s Career Advisory Board. But it’s important to keep your cool to protect your reputation, she says. Here, a few anger coping tips from Levit and other experts to help you channel your rage in a productive way.

RELATED: This Is the Best Way to Handle Your Anger

Take a breather

Ripa took a few days off to gain perspective. But even a few minutes can help when you’re about to boil over. Say, “I need to run to the restroom and I’ll catch up with you in a couple of minutes.” Even if you’re in a meeting. “It’s better to get out and look weird, than be somewhere you can’t control yourself,” Levit says.

Losing control is a risk you can’t afford to take, as Brad Bushman, PhD, a professor of communication and psychology at The Ohio State University, explained to Health in an earlier interview. "Angry people are highly aroused and when people get aroused, they do and say things they later regret.”

After you’ve left the scene, call a trusted friend to vent, suggests Levit. Or simply count: Counting—slowly—to whatever number seems appropriate gives your blood pressure and heart rate a chance to return to normal. The way Bushman put it: "As time passes, arousal diminishes."

Then, head back in. “The situation might be the same, but you got the emotion out of it, reducing the likelihood that the scenario will escalate,” says Levit. Because flipping your lid is never a good idea. “Even if you’re in the right, no one will remember that. All they’ll remember is that you screamed,” she says.

Know your triggers

Gretchen Rubin, best-selling author of The Happiness Project, recommends doing some self-reflection to assess what fuels your fury. In a prior interview, she suggested, “Is it because work seems meaningless? Because you can never get all your tasks done? Or because you have a conflict with a co-worker?

When you can anticipate your anger, you can practice coping in advance, says Levit. For example, you might imagine your boss criticizing you in a meeting. In front of a mirror, practice exactly how you’d respond while remaining calm.

Tune into what triggers you to feel stressed, too. “Stress can lead to anger, which can make you lose control,” Levit points out. So if you know that tight deadlines freak you out, for example, try to work ahead so you’re not racing against the clock.

RELATED: Best and Worst Ways to Cope with Stress

Look for the positive

When your expectations haven’t been met, try to spin the scenario so it’s less painful. Instead of thinking so-and-so should have done this or that, rephrase your thought train, Levit suggests. Start by stating how you have liked things to go down, and then name something you appreciate about your job:

I would have liked if my colleague did such-and-such. But since she didn’t, I have to remember I [have a great job/get paid well/love what I do/make a difference]. So I’m going to figure out how to get past this.

Team members who can “make lemonade out of lemons” are usually well-liked and valued in the workplace, she adds. “People who can come back from adverse situations have better reputations.”

Tales of Berseria confirmed for Europe in spring 2017

Tales of Berseria, the latest in Bandai Namco’s long-running JRPG series, will land in Europe and North America for PC and PlayStation 4 next spring.

Berseria is notable for being the first game in 21-year-old series to feature a sole female protagonist (previous entry Tales of Xillia had two – one male, one female).

Its main character, Velvet Crowe, is a pirate whose arm has been cursed with an infection known as Daemonblight. It can turn humans into, well, demons – who can go on “beserk” rages – hence the name of the game.

The set is based around the procedurally-generated villages found in Minecraft’s overworld, with a number of different villager professions and buildings included, such as a blacksmith’s forge, a library, and a farm with Lego Minecraft potatoes and carrots.

HOW FACEBOOK PLANS TO MAKE VR HANGOUTS MORE REAL, LESS VIRTUAL

HOW FACEBOOK PLANS TO MAKE VR HANGOUTS MORE REAL, LESS VIRTUAL

Facebook and Oculus on VR

Facebook’s purchase of Oculus in 2014 raised some eyebrows, but its presentation on how it plans to make VR a viable platform for social communication proved that it’s making that money work.
At the firm’s F8 developer conference, the company touched on everything from taking selfies in VR to how Oculus Rift‘s Touch controllers will help to make social interactions in a virtual environment a little more personable.
But perhaps the biggest takeaway from the keynote was just how heavily Facebook and Oculus are pushing VR to be more than just a technology that’s fun to use alone, and something that can be experienced with other people – no matter where they are in the world.
Facebook
Creating an authentic presence in VR is a problem that Oculus’ research division is working to solve. Sure, you can put on an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive right now, and feel very much a part of the virtual world that you see.
But what happens when you introduce another living, breathing human into the world?
Oculus tried that out with Toybox, a multiplayer tech demo of sorts that lets you and another person toss objects around and trade punches in a physics-based playground. In it, you can see rough outlines of faces and hands.
Oculus Toybox
There’s definitely a human on the other side of that connection, but there may as well not be based on how it’s rendered.
We saw more of Facebook’s progress to make VR a more interactive, social experience at F8 2016. It was a demo that branched further out from the Toybox playground and allowed two users to visit each other digitally.
Despite being in two different physical locations, they were able to draw clothes onto each other with Oculus Touch controllers, and explore a 360-degree view of London together. It’s not too different in concept to holoportation, a feature introduced recently for the Microsoft HoloLens that allows people to join each other in an augmented reality environment.
Both of these advancements show that we’re getting there, but it would be putting it lightly to say that Facebook wants to take things even further.

You thought today’s VR was futuristic?

There’s no substitute for being in the same room as the person you’re talking to. But, not only can you touch, you can also pick up on physical and behavioral subtleties in this VR environment that you’d probably miss through a Google Hangouts video chat.
During the F8 keynote, Oculus quoted anthropologist Edward Sapir by stating that these small, but meaningful gestures are "…an elaborate code that is written nowhere, known to no one, and understood by all."
And, advanced as it is in its early stages, VR cannot properly crack that code by putting a believable human avatar in a virtual world – yet.
But by properly capturing, displaying and predicting your every movement, the social network company thinks it can make chatting virtually feel as if you’re in the same room – or as close as possible with a head-mounted display strapped to your face. Of course, it’s easier said than done.
Oculus Rift
First, capture the human face as accurately as possible. To do that, Facebook shared some early results from installing a high-resolution camera onto a Rift to capture subtle mouth movements. It needs work, but it’s a heck of an improvement over flat 3D models.
Then, there’s the challenge of transferring this data over a stable connection. It’s an essential ingredient in creating a believable virtual one-on-one with someone. But, as the methodology of capturing every last movement gets more advanced, the amount of bandwidth required to pipe them through to the other side will likely skyrocket.
Panoptic studio
Facebook is so interested in capturing these minute, uniquely human movements that it built another off-the-wall experiment to get even better at it. The Panoptic Studio is an igloo-looking dome with cameras capturing its subjects inside from every angle. It’s highly sensitive at tracking movement, even when it isn’t coming from a person.
The idea here is to intensely study the way we tend to act in various situations, social or otherwise. Ideally, the predictive learnings gathered from the studio will work to both make for more convincing social engagement in future VR apps, as well as lighten the load on the hardware-intensive capturing side of the process.
Panoptic studio
Ever since its acquisition of Oculus, the question on everyone’s mind has been: "So, when will we see a fully virtual version of Facebook?" The answer, just like the arrival of the Oculus Rift was, has been a long time coming, but is still a long way off.
We saw an early glimpse into the future of Facebook in VR and, thankfully, it won’t just be a bunch of menus or Candy Crush invitations.

MOM TIPS: HOW TO RELIEVE HEADACHES DURING PREGNANCY

MOM TIPS: HOW TO RELIEVE HEADACHES DURING PREGNANCY

headaches-during-pregnancy
Pregnancy is the time when a woman tends to undergo hormonal changes. Due to this hormonal changes, there are certain physical alterations that a pregnant mother bears. One of these is headaches during pregnancy. This headache is related/ similar to tension headache.

The trimesters

Having a headache during pregnancy is not abnormal. Out of the three stages, the first symptom of headaches start to appear during the first trimester. This happens due to the increase in blood flow and circulation, and the overflowing of hormones in the body. Cutting down on caffeine is also considered to be another factor. Meanwhile, the body of the mother is getting accustomed to the new changes that is taking place. Once the gushing of hormones and the blood flow settle down, which eventually does in the second trimester, the mother can relax a bit for those three months. The unfortunate part is, the headaches might come back in the third trimester. The reasons being:
  • The tension of the final outcome
  • Carrying extra weight that leads to bad posture
  • Lack of sleep
  • Low blood sugar
  • High blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Sinus congestion

Migraine during pregnancy

Surprisingly, majority of the women who suffer from migraine said that this form of pain reduced dramatically than before. Migraine is a neurological disorder that triggers the pain severely. It is caused by hormonal fluctuation during menstruation. Out of 80 percent of female migraine sufferers, 58 percent said they have mild attacks of migraine, or those who are very lucky suffer no pain at all. Only a handful of females reported that they suffer from extreme migraine at least twice or thrice during the entire pregnancy period.
The reason for a reduction in migraine headaches during pregnancy is because the hormonal fluctuation settles down in the body during the pregnancy period.

What can be done to relieve headaches during pregnancy?

There is a limitation to medicine intake during pregnancy. Most of the drugs are prohibited, leaving only a few option to be considered. It is always advised to seeknatural remedies to cure headaches. Some of the helpful tips are given below.
  • Eat small amounts of healthy meals frequently. Do not stay hungry for a longer period of time.
  • Get adequate amount of rest, especially during the third trimester.
  • Apply cold/ hot compression on the head, neck and shoulders.
  • Go for a body massage.
  • Do exercises as shown by the doctor.
  • Take warm shower never possible.
  • Improve the bad posture to prevent further headache.
  • Take naps whenever possible, preferably in a dark room.
  • Try to go outside and breathe in fresh air.
  • Listen to music that will distract from all the anxieties.
  • Hydrate by drinking plenty of water, and fresh juices.
  • For severe cases, go for acupuncture and acupressure.
If the above natural remedies don’t work, the safest medication is acetaminophen (Tylenol). If the pain persists for few days, the doctor may prescribe beta-blockers. Beta blockers are used to control blood pressure, are safe for pregnant mothers, and can reduce severe headaches.

What else to avoid

There are some food, drink and medications that are recommended in order to avoid headaches during pregnancy. Food like:
  • Chocolates
  • Food containing artificial sweeteners
  • Too much sweets
  • Old cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Sour cream
  • Peanuts
  • processed meat
  • Smoked salmon
Drinks such as:
  • Alcohol
  • Can juices containing preservatives
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Coffee
Medications:
  • Ibuprofen
  • Aspirin
Headaches during pregnancy are usually nothing serious. They will come and go, a mother just needs to be cautious and can easily prevent them from coming. It just needs a little persistence, some well balanced lifestyle, eating habits, good posture, and plenty of positivity and happy thoughts. These headaches are preventable. But whatever a pregnant mother does, always ask the practitioner before doing anything.
